When Meta ads that used to work suddenly stop, the cause is almost always one of five things: tired creative, broken tracking, an audience that’s been used up, too many changes, or a funnel problem after the click. The good news is that each one has a clear fix.
Here’s how to work out which one you’re dealing with.
1. Your Creative Is Worn Out
This is the most common cause. People have seen the same ad too many times, so they stop noticing it and stop clicking.
Signs: frequency climbing, click-through rate falling over a few weeks, cost per result rising while nothing else changed.
Fix: treat creative as the main thing you manage. Test new hooks, formats and offers on a regular schedule. Keep the winners running, retire what’s fading, and always have the next round of ads ready before the current ones tire.
2. Your Tracking Is Broken
Meta’s algorithm optimizes toward the conversions it can see. If the Pixel stops firing, a checkout or form changes, or events aren’t deduplicated, the algorithm starts optimizing toward the wrong people.
Signs: conversions in Ads Manager don’t match your CRM or store, a sudden drop after a website update, warnings in Events Manager.
Fix: check the Pixel and the Conversions API together, confirm event matching quality in Events Manager, and test a real conversion end to end after every website change.
3. You’ve Used Up Your Audience
Small or narrow audiences fatigue fast. Once the people most likely to buy have seen you, results drop because the ads are reaching worse prospects.
Signs: rising frequency on a small audience, retargeting pools shrinking, results that were great at a low budget and fell apart when you scaled.
Fix: broaden targeting and let Meta’s algorithm find buyers, refresh lookalike and retargeting audiences, and scale budgets gradually instead of in big jumps.
4. You’re Changing Too Much, Too Often
Every significant edit to an ad set can send it back into Meta’s learning phase. Meta’s own guidance is that an ad set needs around 50 optimization events in a week to stabilize. Constant tweaks to budgets, audiences and ads mean it never gets there.
Signs: ad sets stuck in “Learning” or “Learning limited,” performance that swings week to week.
Fix: consolidate into fewer campaigns and ad sets, make changes in planned batches, and give each test enough time and budget to produce a result.
5. The Problem Is After the Click
Sometimes the ads are fine and the landing page isn’t. A slow page, an offer that doesn’t match the ad, or a long form can kill conversion rates even when clicks are cheap.
Signs: click-through rate is steady but conversion rate dropped, mobile performs much worse than desktop, people leave within seconds.
Fix: send traffic to a page built for that specific offer, make it fast on mobile, and keep the ad’s promise and the page’s headline aligned. Our conversion rate optimization work focuses on exactly this.
A Quick Diagnosis Checklist
- Compare Ads Manager conversions with your CRM or store for the last 30 days.
- Check frequency and click-through rate trends for each active ad.
- Look for ad sets stuck in learning.
- Review what changed on your website around the time results dropped.
- Test the landing page on your phone, as a first-time visitor would.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I refresh Meta ad creative?
There’s no fixed schedule. Watch frequency and click-through rate, and plan new creative before the current ads fatigue. Accounts that spend more need fresh creative more often.
Should I turn off ads that stopped working?
Not straight away. First check tracking and the landing page, because the problem may not be the ad. If the ad itself is fatigued, replace it with a new test rather than pausing the whole campaign.
Does Meta still work after the iOS privacy changes?
Yes, but tracking has to be set up properly. Using the Conversions API alongside the Pixel, and sending offline conversions where you can, gives Meta far better data to optimize with.
