The short answer: SEO and AI visibility are not competitors. SEO gets your pages crawled, indexed and ranked in search results. AI visibility is about whether tools like Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude mention your brand and cite your pages when they answer a question. You cannot have the second without the first, because every one of these AI systems pulls from a search index of some kind.
What changes is the scoreboard. A top 3 ranking no longer guarantees you show up in the AI answer that sits above it, and AI answers lean heavily on what other sites, reviewers and directories say about you. So the practical move for most businesses in 2026 is to keep doing solid SEO, then add the work that AI answers reward: brand mentions, reviews, clear first-hand content, open crawler access and new ways of measuring results.
SEO vs AI Visibility at a Glance
| Factor | Traditional SEO | AI Visibility (GEO / AEO) |
|---|---|---|
| Main goal | Rank pages in organic search results | Get mentioned and cited inside AI-generated answers |
| Where you show up | Google and Bing results pages, map pack | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Claude |
| What “winning” looks like | A high position and a click | A brand mention, a citation link, or a recommendation |
| Foundation | Crawlable, indexable, fast, helpful pages | The same foundation, plus access for each AI company’s search crawler |
| Biggest outside signal | Backlinks and relevance | Brand mentions across the web, reviews and listings |
| Number of “engines” | Mostly Google, some Bing | Several, each with its own index and habits |
| Overlap with Google top 10 | Is the top 10 | Partial: about 38% of AI Overview citations, far less for most chatbots |
| Click behavior | Clicks are the main payoff | Fewer clicks overall, but cited brands earn more of them |
| Measurement | Search Console, GA4, rank trackers | Search Console AI report, Bing AI Performance, GA4 referrals, prompt trackers |
| Predictability | Fairly stable rankings | Answers vary from run to run and change often |
| Special files or markup required | No | No, per Google; llms.txt has no proven effect |
What SEO and AI Visibility Actually Mean
SEO (search engine optimization) is the work of making your website easy for search engines to crawl, understand and trust, so your pages rank for the searches your customers make. For how it compares with paid search, see SEO vs Google Ads.
AI visibility is how often, and how favorably, AI assistants and AI search features mention your business. You will also hear it called generative engine optimization (GEO) or answer engine optimization (AEO). The term GEO comes from a 2023 research paper by Princeton and IIT Delhi researchers, which found that adding citations, quotations and statistics to content could raise its visibility in generative answers by up to 40%, while old-school keyword stuffing performed worse than doing nothing.
Google’s own position is blunt. Its guide to optimizing for generative AI search (updated July 2026) says optimizing for these features “is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” That is the right frame: AI visibility is an extension of SEO with a few new priorities, not a separate discipline that replaces it.
How AI Search Engines Choose Sources in 2026
Every major AI assistant that cites sources works the same basic way: it runs one or more searches, retrieves pages, then writes an answer grounded in what it found. The differences come from which index each one searches and how many related searches it runs.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
Both features draw on Google’s regular search index. Google’s AI features documentation explains that they may use “query fan-out,” issuing multiple related searches across subtopics to build a response, which is why they often cite pages that do not rank for your exact query. To be eligible, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Google states there are no additional requirements and no special optimizations needed.
Scale matters here. In Alphabet’s Q2 2026 earnings remarks, Sundar Pichai said AI Mode has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users and that AI Overviews and AI Mode now work as one Search experience.
ChatGPT Search
OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers plus content from partners. For your site to appear, OpenAI’s crawler documentation recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. BrightLocal’s 2026 research found that for local queries ChatGPT rarely cites Google Business Profiles and leans more on Yelp and Bing, which explains why its recommendations often differ from Google’s.
Perplexity
Perplexity runs its own index built by PerplexityBot, which its documentation says is used to surface and link websites in results, not to train AI models. Perplexity cites sources prominently on every answer, and in Ahrefs’ research it had the highest overlap with Google’s top 10 of the assistants tested.
Gemini, Copilot and Claude
Gemini grounds answers in Google Search, and Microsoft Copilot grounds in Bing. Anthropic’s help center describes three bots: ClaudeBot for model training, Claude-SearchBot for indexing content for search, and Claude-User for fetching pages when a person asks Claude a question.
How Much Do Google Rankings and AI Citations Overlap?
This is the question most business owners care about: if you rank well on Google, do you automatically show up in AI answers? The best public data says rankings help, but they are far from a guarantee.
- AI Overviews: An Ahrefs study published March 2026 of 863,000 keyword results and about 4 million AI Overview URLs found that 37.9% of cited pages ranked in the top 10 for the same query. Another 31.2% ranked in positions 11 to 100, and 31% ranked beyond 100. Ahrefs’ earlier July 2025 figure was 76%, though it changed its methodology between studies, so the two numbers are not directly comparable.
- Chat assistants: A separate Ahrefs analysis of 15,000 long-tail queries (August 2025) found that only about 12% of URLs cited by AI assistants ranked in Google’s top 10 for the original prompt. Perplexity was highest at 28.6%. ChatGPT was 8% or lower.
These are single-vendor studies, and AI answers vary from run to run. Still, the direction is clear: AI tools pull from pages that rank for related sub-questions, not just your head term, so deep topic coverage matters more than ranking one page for one keyword.
Why AI Visibility Builds on SEO Instead of Replacing It
Low overlap with the top 10 doesn’t mean SEO stopped mattering. Look at what every AI system requires:
- Crawlable, indexed pages. Google’s AI features only cite pages in its index. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude can only cite what their search crawlers have reached.
- Trust and quality signals. Google says its AI features rely on its core ranking and quality systems. The same helpful, people-first content standards apply.
- Technical health. Slow pages, broken rendering and accidental crawler blocks hurt you in both. Start with our guide to improving WordPress speed.
Google even lists “AEO/GEO hacks” in its myths section, including chunking content into tiny pieces, rewriting for AI phrasing and seeking inauthentic mentions. Its advice is to skip them. If an agency sells AI visibility as a replacement for SEO services, be skeptical.
What Is Different About AI Visibility
The foundation is shared, but the emphasis shifts in four important ways.
Brand Mentions Carry More Weight Than Links
In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with AI Overview visibility (0.664), well ahead of backlinks (0.218) and Domain Rating (0.326). That is correlation, not proof of cause, but it fits how language models connect brands to topics. Coverage in industry publications, local news, podcasts and comparison articles builds that association. Fake mentions don’t, and Google says its spam systems work against them.
Reviews and Local Listings Feed the Answers
For local businesses, AI answers are built largely from listings and review platforms. BrightLocal’s September 2026 study of 1.9 million citations across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews found that Google Business Profile was the single largest cited source (about 28.6% of citations), followed by Yelp at about 9.5%. Business websites made up 42% of citations, so your own site still matters.
Consumers are using these answers. BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found 45% of US consumers now use ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% the year before. A complete Google Business Profile and steady real reviews are now AI visibility work.
Clicks Are Scarcer, but Citations Still Pay
AI answers reduce clicks. A Pew Research Center analysis of 900 US adults’ browsing found people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% when it did not. Only 1% of visits included a click on a link inside the summary.
Being cited changes the math, though. Seer Interactive’s April 2026 update, covering 53 brands and 5.47 million queries, found that on 2025 informational queries with an AI Overview, cited brands averaged a 2.07% organic click-through rate versus 0.94% for brands not cited. Queries with no AI Overview did best, at 3.35%. You can’t stop AI answers from appearing, but you can be the brand inside them.
You Are Optimizing for Many Engines, Not One
Traditional SEO is mostly about Google. AI visibility spans Google’s index, Bing’s (which feeds Copilot), Perplexity’s and Anthropic’s, which makes Bing Webmaster Tools, Yelp and industry directories more important than before. The traffic is still modest, though: Conductor’s benchmarks report, covering 13,770 US domains from May to September 2025, found AI referrals made up about 1.08% of website traffic, with ChatGPT sending 87.4% of it.
The Technical Layer: Crawlers, Structured Data and llms.txt
robots.txt Rules for AI Crawlers
Most AI companies now separate their training crawler from their search crawler. That lets you decide independently whether your content trains models and whether it can be cited in answers. Blocking the wrong one can quietly remove you from AI search.
| User agent | Company | What it does | If you block it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Googlebot | Crawls for Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode | You drop out of Search and its AI features | |
| Google-Extended | A control token for Gemini training and grounding | No effect on Search inclusion or ranking | |
| OAI-SearchBot | OpenAI | Surfaces sites in ChatGPT search | You may not appear in ChatGPT search answers |
| GPTBot | OpenAI | Collects content for model training | Signals your content should not be used for training |
| PerplexityBot | Perplexity | Indexes sites for Perplexity search results | You may not be cited by Perplexity |
| ClaudeBot / Claude-SearchBot | Anthropic | Training / search indexing | Excluded from training / from Claude’s search index |
Google confirms in its crawler documentation that Google-Extended “does not impact a site’s inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal.” User-triggered fetchers such as ChatGPT-User and Perplexity-User are different: robots.txt may not apply because a person requested the page. Also check your CDN and security plugin, since firewall bot rules can block AI search crawlers even when robots.txt allows them.
Structured Data
Google says structured data “isn’t required for generative AI search, and there’s no special schema.org markup you need to add,” though it still recommends schema for rich results. Microsoft has gone further: Bing’s Fabrice Canel confirmed in 2025 that schema markup helps Microsoft’s LLMs understand content. Our take: accurate Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Article and FAQ markup that matches your visible content is cheap, helps classic search, and may help some AI systems. It won’t rescue thin content.
llms.txt: What It Does and Doesn’t Do
llms.txt is a proposed file that gives AI tools a Markdown map of your site. It gets a lot of hype, but the evidence is thin:
- Google says Search does not use llms.txt, and publishing one will neither help nor hurt your Search visibility.
- SE Ranking’s study of about 300,000 domains (November 2025) found 10.13% had the file and found no correlation between having one and being cited by AI.
- Ahrefs’ June 2026 study of 137,210 domains found 97% of llms.txt files received zero requests in May 2026, and AI search retrieval bots made up about 1% of the requests that did occur.
It can be useful for developer documentation that coding assistants read. For a typical business site, it is a low-priority extra, not an AI visibility strategy.
How to Measure AI Visibility
Measurement improved a lot in 2026, with first-party data now available from Google and Microsoft.
Google Search Console’s Generative AI Report
Google introduced a Search generative AI performance report in June 2026, and as of August 31, 2026 it has rolled out to all websites worldwide. According to Google’s help page, it shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. It does not show clicks. Sites with too few AI impressions may not see the report. Clicks from AI features are still counted in the regular Performance report under the “Web” search type, blended with everything else.
Search Console also added a Search generative AI control that lets you exclude your site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover’s AI features. Google says it is not a ranking signal for regular results. For most businesses, opting out means giving up visibility, so leave it on unless you have a specific reason.
Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance
Microsoft launched AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools in public preview in February 2026. It shows citations across Copilot, Bing’s AI summaries and select partners, which pages are cited, and sample “grounding queries” the AI used to find your content, which is useful for spotting content gaps.
AI Referral Traffic in GA4
Visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude show up in GA4 as referrals from their domains, and ChatGPT adds a utm_source tag to many links it cites. Create a custom channel group that matches those referrers so AI traffic gets its own line, then compare its conversions with organic search. Expect some undercounting, since app traffic can land as “direct.” AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks can’t be separated in GA4; they arrive as Google organic.
Prompt Tracking Tools
Tools such as Ahrefs Brand Radar and Semrush’s AI Visibility Toolkit run large prompt sets across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews and more, then report your mentions and share of voice against competitors. Use them for trends, and treat them as samples: Google warns that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems.
When to Prioritize Classic SEO
Some businesses should keep most of their effort on traditional SEO for now:
- Your site has technical problems. If pages aren’t indexed, load slowly or block crawlers, fix that first. AI visibility work on a broken foundation is wasted money.
- You sell on transactional, “near me” searches. A roofer or a dentist still wins most leads from the map pack and organic results. AI answers matter, but your Google Business Profile and local rankings carry the load.
- You need leads this quarter. Neither is fast. Paid search may be the better short-term lever while organic work compounds.
When to Push Harder on AI Visibility
- Buyers research before they buy. B2B services, software, healthcare, legal, home improvement and other considered purchases generate the comparison questions AI assistants answer all day.
- Your informational traffic is falling. If your guides and blog posts are losing clicks to AI Overviews, getting cited inside those Overviews is how you claw back value.
- Competitors are named and you aren’t. Ask ChatGPT and AI Mode “who is the best [your service] in [your city]” a few times. If competitors appear and you don’t, you have a brand-mention and review gap to close.
What We Recommend at Sage
We treat SEO and AI visibility as one program with two scoreboards. Here is the order we work in for most clients:
- Audit access and indexing. Confirm the major search and AI search crawlers can reach your pages and that key pages are indexed in Google and Bing.
- Benchmark where you stand. Pull the Search Console generative AI report, Bing’s AI Performance report and GA4 AI referrals, then test the prompts your customers actually ask.
- Build topic depth, not just keyword pages. Answer the follow-up questions your buyers ask, with first-hand expertise, real numbers and clear headings. This is what query fan-out rewards.
- Strengthen off-site signals. Business profiles, directory consistency, review generation and earned mentions in publications your customers read.
- Keep the technical base clean. Fast WordPress builds, accurate schema that matches visible content, and solid internal linking.
If you want to know where you stand today, our AI visibility audit checks crawler access, current citations and the gaps competitors are filling. For ongoing work, our AI visibility services pair with SEO rather than replacing it, and you can see how we package both on our organic visibility pricing page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SEO dead because of AI search?
No. Every AI search feature pulls from a search index, and Google says its AI features rely on the same core ranking systems as regular Search. What has changed is that clicks are harder to earn, so being cited inside AI answers is now part of the job.
What is the difference between SEO, GEO and AEO?
SEO focuses on ranking in search results. GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) are mostly interchangeable terms for getting mentioned and cited in AI-generated answers. In practice, GEO and AEO rest on SEO and add emphasis on brand mentions, reviews and multi-engine coverage.
Does ranking on Google help you show up in ChatGPT?
It helps indirectly, but the overlap is small. Ahrefs found 8% or less of ChatGPT’s citations ranked in Google’s top 10 for the same prompt. ChatGPT uses third-party search providers and leans on sources like Yelp and Bing for local queries, so Bing visibility and listings matter too.
How do I check if my business appears in AI search?
Start with the free first-party reports: the generative AI performance report in Google Search Console and AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools. Add an AI referral channel in GA4. Then test real customer prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Mode, or use a prompt tracking tool for ongoing monitoring.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
Not for visibility. Google says Search ignores it, and large studies from SE Ranking and Ahrefs found no link to AI citations and almost no requests from AI search bots. It is harmless to add, but spend your time on content, reviews and crawler access first.
Should I block GPTBot and other AI crawlers?
Blocking training crawlers like GPTBot, ClaudeBot or Google-Extended is a business decision and does not affect Google Search rankings. Blocking search crawlers like OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Claude-SearchBot can remove you from those AI answers. Most businesses that want leads should allow the search crawlers.
