WordPress vs Wix (2026): Costs, SEO, Speed and Lock-In Compared

Wix wins on speed to launch and zero maintenance; WordPress wins on ownership, flexibility and long-term growth. Here is a current, fair comparison of costs, SEO, Core Web Vitals, ecommerce and lock-in.
Table of Contents

The short answer: Wix is the faster, simpler choice if you want a good-looking site live this week and never want to think about hosting, updates or plugins. WordPress is the better long-term choice if your website is a real growth channel, because you own it outright, can move it to any host, and can extend it in almost any direction.

Wix has closed a lot of old gaps: solid SEO tools, strong Core Web Vitals scores and an AI builder that drafts a full site from a prompt. What it can’t fix is the platform trade-off: your Wix site only runs on Wix. WordPress asks more of you in setup and upkeep, and in return gives you control, portability and a much bigger ecosystem.

Below is a current comparison, with prices as of October 2026. “WordPress” here means self-hosted WordPress from WordPress.org, not WordPress.com.

How Much Does Wix Cost vs WordPress?

“WordPress is free” and “Wix is $17 a month” are both true and both misleading. Here is what you actually pay.

Wix Premium Plans and Prices

According to Wix’s own plan guide and its pricing page, these are the US prices when billed annually, as of October 2026:

Wix planPrice (billed annually)StorageBest for
Free$0500 MB (1 GB bandwidth)Testing only; Wix branding, no custom domain
Light$17/month2 GBSimple brochure sites, portfolios
Core$29/month50 GBSmall businesses that take payments or bookings
Business$39/month100 GBGrowing stores and service businesses
Business Elite$159/monthUnlimitedHigh-volume sellers, advanced developer needs
EnterpriseCustomCustomLarge organizations

A few details matter more than the headline prices:

  • Annual prices are paid upfront. Monthly billing is available but costs more per month. Prices vary by country and exclude tax.
  • Light can’t take payments. Online payments, ecommerce and scheduling start at Core. If you need to sell anything or book appointments, budget for Core at minimum.
  • Bandwidth is unlimited on paid plans. Wix’s storage and bandwidth documentation confirms unlimited bandwidth on every upgrade; storage is the real limit, which matters if you host a lot of video.
  • The free domain lasts one year. After that you pay for renewal, and professional email (such as Google Workspace) is a separate cost.
  • Apps can add up. Many App Market apps have their own monthly fees on top of your plan.

WordPress Total Cost of Ownership

The WordPress software is free. Running a professional WordPress site is not. Here are typical line items, based on what we see across the sites we build and manage:

  • Domain: roughly $15 to $25 per year.
  • Hosting: bargain shared hosting can be under $10/month, but quality managed WordPress hosting for a business site usually runs about $25 to $60/month. This is the line item you should not cheap out on, because hosting drives speed, uptime and security.
  • Page builder or premium theme: Elementor Pro plans start at $60/year for one site.
  • Premium plugins: $0 to a few hundred dollars a year, depending on forms, SEO, backups and security tools.
  • Maintenance: your own time, or a care plan. Sage’s website management plans start at $99/month and cover updates, backups, security monitoring and fixes.

Side-by-Side: What a Year Really Costs

For a do-it-yourself small business site, the totals are closer than people expect. A Wix Business plan is $468 for the year. A DIY WordPress site on solid managed hosting with Elementor Pro and a domain lands somewhere around $400 to $800. Wix is not the expensive option here, and WordPress is not free.

The gap shows up in two places. First, maintenance: Wix includes it, while WordPress needs your time or a paid plan. Second, professional design: a custom agency build is a real investment on either platform. Our guide to what a website costs breaks down those numbers in detail.

Ease of Use and Speed to Launch

This is Wix’s clearest win. You pick a template or let the AI draft a site, drag elements where you want them, connect a domain and publish. Hosting, SSL, security and updates are handled. A motivated owner can launch over a weekend.

WordPress has more moving parts. You choose a host, install WordPress, pick a theme or builder, add plugins, configure caching and backups, and keep everything updated. Builders like Elementor make page design visual, but the overall system has a steeper learning curve, and small mistakes (a bad plugin, a skipped update) can cause real problems. If you have ever hit a white screen or a “critical error” message, you know the feeling.

Wix’s AI Site Builder

In January 2026 Wix announced Wix Harmony, its new AI website builder. It combines prompt-based building with the visual drag-and-drop editor, so you can generate a full site, page or section from a description and then refine it by hand. Its built-in AI agent, Aria, can take requests like “change the color scheme” or “add a store,” explain how things work, and flag issues while you edit.

It is impressive for first drafts. Just keep expectations realistic: AI gets you a plausible layout fast, but it doesn’t know your customers, your offer or what makes people call you. Strategy, messaging and conversion design still decide whether the site produces leads, and those are human decisions.

Design Flexibility

Wix’s editor gives you pixel-level placement and hundreds of templates. The limits appear when you want something the editor wasn’t designed for: unusual layouts, custom functionality, deep integrations or full control of the HTML and CSS the site outputs. Also note that switching templates on a classic Wix site generally means rebuilding rather than swapping a theme.

WordPress has no ceiling. With a builder like Elementor, a custom theme or hand-written code, a developer can build essentially any design and any feature. That freedom is why most custom agency work, including ours, is built on WordPress.

What About Wix Studio?

Wix Studio is Wix’s platform for agencies and freelancers. It adds responsive design controls with custom breakpoints, CSS controls, multi-site management, client handoff tools, team permissions and real-time collaboration. Its site plans are tiered by limits:

  • Basic: 10 GB storage, 1,500 CMS items, and no online payments.
  • Standard: 50 GB storage, 4,000 CMS items, payments and in-person POS.
  • Plus: 120 GB storage, 20,000 CMS items and priority customer care.
  • Elite: unlimited media storage, up to 10 million CMS items and the full developer platform.

Studio pricing sits in roughly the same range as the standard Wix plans, with Elite at the top. Studio is a real step up for designers, but it lives on the same platform: same hosting, same app ecosystem, same lock-in.

SEO and AI Search Visibility

The “Wix is bad for SEO” reputation is outdated. Today Wix gives you editable titles and meta descriptions, automatic sitemaps, a robots.txt editor, structured data markup, a 301 redirect manager and a guided SEO setup checklist. That covers what most small business sites need.

Wix has also moved early on AI search. In July 2025 it launched an AI Visibility Overview that tracks how often tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity cite your site, and it offers llms.txt management to some premium ecommerce users.

Where Wix SEO Still Has Limits

  • URL structure: blog posts and product pages default to /post/ and /product-page/ prefixes. Wix now lets you customize those URL patterns, but each pattern must include at least one variable, so you don’t get the fully free-form control WordPress offers.
  • Code and server control: you can’t change server configuration, choose your own CDN or caching layer, or fully control the HTML the platform outputs.
  • Advanced and large-scale SEO: programmatic pages, complex internal linking, custom schema at scale and technical audits are easier on WordPress, where you can use any plugin or write custom code.

Our take: for a local service business with 10 to 30 pages, the platform is rarely what holds rankings back. Content, reviews, your Google Business Profile and links matter far more. For content-heavy sites, competitive markets and serious AI search work, WordPress gives you more levers. That’s why our AI visibility and SEO work leans on WordPress builds.

Site Speed and Core Web Vitals

Here the data favors Wix, and it’s worth being clear about why. Google’s Core Web Vitals measure loading (LCP), responsiveness (INP) and visual stability (CLS) using real Chrome user data. The HTTP Archive’s Core Web Vitals Technology Report tracks pass rates by platform.

In a May 2026 analysis of that report, Search Engine Journal found that roughly 80% of Wix sites had good Core Web Vitals, compared with about 49% of WordPress sites. A year earlier, using June 2025 data, the same publication reported 70.76% for Wix and 43.44% for WordPress. Both are improving, Wix faster.

Two caveats matter:

  • These are averages across millions of sites. Wix controls hosting and code for every site, so its floor is high. WordPress includes millions of neglected sites on cheap hosting, which drags its median down.
  • Your site is not the median. A well-built WordPress site on good hosting, with lean code and caching, can pass comfortably. With Wix you get a reliable baseline; with WordPress, speed depends on who builds and hosts it. Our guide on how to improve WordPress website speed covers the fixes.

Security and Maintenance

With Wix, security and maintenance are Wix’s job. There are no plugins to update, no PHP versions to manage and no server to patch. For a busy owner with no technical help, that is a big advantage.

WordPress puts that responsibility on you. Patchstack’s State of WordPress Security in 2026 report counted 11,334 new vulnerabilities in the WordPress ecosystem in 2025. 91% were in plugins, 9% in themes, and only 6 in WordPress core. The risk comes from outdated or poorly coded add-ons, which is why updates, backups and monitoring aren’t optional. We break down the biggest risks in WordPress security threats.

Ecommerce: Wix Stores vs WooCommerce

Wix’s ecommerce starts at the Core plan, with standard features on Business and advanced features on Business Elite. You get product management, inventory, abandoned cart recovery, subscriptions, multiple currencies and multichannel selling, all built in.

With Wix Payments in the US, Wix lists processing fees of 2.9% + $0.30 for most cards, 3.7% + $0.30 for American Express, 3.49% + $0.49 for PayPal and Venmo, and 6% + $0.30 for buy-now-pay-later options like Afterpay, Affirm and Klarna. Cross-border payments add 1.5%. Wix doesn’t list a separate commission on sales beyond those fees.

WooCommerce, the main WordPress option, is a free plugin that you can shape into almost any store: B2B pricing, complex product options, memberships, custom checkout flows and deep ERP or CRM integrations. It also needs more setup and upkeep. For a small catalog, Wix is often enough; for complex rules or big growth plans, WooCommerce gives you more room. If you’re also weighing Shopify, read our WooCommerce vs Shopify comparison.

Integrations and Scalability

The Wix App Market offers several hundred apps across marketing, selling, bookings, events, media and communication, plus Wix’s own business tools. The catch is breadth: if the integration you need isn’t there, your options are custom development on Wix’s developer platform or a workaround.

The WordPress plugin directory lists over 75,000 free plugins, plus thousands of premium ones. Nearly every CRM, booking system, marketing platform and payment gateway has a WordPress integration. Quality varies widely, so choose carefully. For scaling to hundreds of pages, multiple languages, membership areas or custom applications, WordPress has far fewer walls.

Ownership, Portability and Lock-In

This is the factor owners overlook most, and the one that costs the most later.

Wix says plainly in its help center that a Wix site must be hosted on Wix’s servers, because its architecture does not support external hosting. Your content belongs to you, and you can connect a domain you own, but you cannot export your Wix site and run it somewhere else. If you leave, you rebuild. Some data, like product lists and contacts, can be exported, but the design, layout and site structure must be recreated on the new platform.

WordPress is open-source software. You can download your entire site (files and database) and move it to another host whenever you like. If your host raises prices or your agency disappears, your website comes with you. When clients come to us from Wix, a move to WordPress is a rebuild plus a careful URL redirect plan to protect rankings, which is what our WordPress migration service handles.

Support

Wix offers 24/7 customer care on its premium plans, plus priority care on higher Studio tiers. One company is responsible for everything, which keeps things simple.

WordPress has no central help desk. Support comes from your host, plugin developers and your developer or agency. With a good partner, that often beats a platform hotline because the person helping you knows your site. Without one, you rely on forums and documentation.

Who Should Choose Wix

Wix is a smart choice when simplicity and speed matter more than control:

  • A new solo business testing an idea. A photographer, coach or consultant who needs a credible site this month for a few hundred dollars a year.
  • Owners with no technical help. If nobody will ever update plugins or watch backups, a managed platform is safer than a neglected WordPress site.
  • Simple booking or small-catalog businesses. A salon, studio or boutique selling a few dozen products can run comfortably on Wix’s built-in bookings and stores.

Who Should Choose WordPress

WordPress is the better fit when your website is a growth engine you plan to invest in for years:

  • Lead-generation businesses running ads and SEO. Law firms, home services, medical practices and B2B companies that need landing pages, tracking, CRM integrations and fast testing.
  • Content-heavy sites. If you plan to publish hundreds of articles, location pages or resources, WordPress handles content at scale better.
  • Brands that need custom design or features. Calculators, portals, directories, multilingual sites or unique layouts are easier and cheaper to build on WordPress.
  • Anyone who wants to own their platform. If you want the freedom to change hosts, agencies or developers without starting over, WordPress is the safe long-term bet.

What We Recommend at Sage

We build our client sites on WordPress, designed in Figma and built with Elementor, and we host and maintain many of them ourselves. We chose WordPress because our clients need sites that generate leads, rank, connect to their marketing stack and grow with them, and because we want them to own what they pay for.

That said, we don’t push WordPress on everyone. If you’re just starting out, have a small budget and no one to maintain a site, Wix can be the right first step, and we’ll tell you so. Our usual advice:

  • Start with your goals, not the platform. If the site needs to produce revenue, plan for conversion, tracking and SEO from day one.
  • If you choose WordPress, don’t skip maintenance. An unmaintained WordPress site is the worst of both worlds. Good hosting and a care plan close most of the gap with Wix on speed and security.
  • If you choose Wix, plan for the exit. Keep your domain registered somewhere you control, keep copies of your content and images, and know that a future move means a rebuild.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wix or WordPress better for SEO?

Both can rank well. Wix’s built-in tools cover the basics for most small sites and its average Core Web Vitals scores are strong. WordPress offers more control over URLs, code, schema and server setup, which matters most for content-heavy sites and competitive markets.

Is Wix cheaper than WordPress?

Not necessarily. Wix plans run about $17 to $159 per month billed annually as of October 2026, while a DIY WordPress site with good hosting often costs a similar amount per year. The real difference is maintenance: Wix includes it, while WordPress requires your time or a paid care plan.

Can I move my Wix site to WordPress?

Not automatically. Wix sites can’t be exported or hosted elsewhere, so moving to WordPress means rebuilding the design and moving your content over. Done properly, with 301 redirects from every old URL, you can make the switch without losing your search rankings.

Is WordPress harder to use than Wix?

Yes, at first. Wix is an all-in-one product built for beginners, while WordPress requires choosing hosting, themes and plugins and keeping them updated. Once a professional sets it up, editing pages in WordPress with a builder like Elementor is not much harder than editing in Wix.

Do professional web designers use Wix?

Some do, especially through Wix Studio, which is built for agencies and freelancers. Most custom agency work is still done on WordPress because of its flexibility, integrations and portability. Wix Studio fits teams that want design control without managing hosting.

Is Wix faster than WordPress?

On average, yes. HTTP Archive data reported in 2026 shows a much higher share of Wix sites passing Core Web Vitals than WordPress sites. A well-built WordPress site on quality hosting can match or beat that, but speed on WordPress depends on how it is built and hosted.

Can Wix handle a large ecommerce store?

Wix’s Business Elite plan adds unlimited storage and advanced ecommerce features, and it works well for many small and mid-sized stores. Stores with complex pricing, large catalogs or custom integrations usually find more flexibility in WooCommerce or Shopify.

Making the Right Call

WordPress vs Wix isn’t about which platform is “best.” It’s about which trade-off fits your business: Wix trades control for convenience, and WordPress trades convenience for ownership and room to grow. If you want a second opinion on your situation, or you’re ready to build a WordPress site that’s fast, secure and built to bring in leads, reach out to our team and we’ll give you a straight recommendation, even if it’s Wix.
