Our Keyword Research Approach

These three tools are useful, as they help us find keyword terms that have substantial traffic values but are also not overly difficult to win.

Our personal approach at Sage is to go after these special middle-of-the-pack keyword phrases, which are called “medium tail” keywords.

If you’re unfamiliar with the different keywords types, here is a breakdown:

Short Tail Keywords

Short tail keywords are broad, popular keyword phrases that are very high in traffic value but are also very difficult to win. A good example of a short tail keyword is “Google”.

Get this:

A supplementary keyword tool we use called Keyword Surfer puts the estimated monthly search volume for the word “Google” at 68,000,000 in the USA alone.

As you can imagine, competition for this keyword is extremely fierce and is much too difficult for small to medium-sized businesses to win.

Only the largest companies with multi-million dollar budgets have the capacity to show up on the first page in Google’s search results for this specific keyword.

Medium Tail Keywords

The good news is:

Medium tail keywords are still fairly popular and have substantial traffic values but are also much more winnable than short tail keywords.

A good example of a medium tail keyword is “alternative search engines”.

For this keyword, Keyword Surfer estimates a monthly traffic value of 3,600.

While this is far less than the 68,000,000 searches the keyword “Google” receives, it is still a valuable chunk of traffic for small to medium-sized businesses.

Whether you go after a medium tail keyword like “alternative search engines,” however, depends on the difficulty of winning the term. Medium tail keywords fluctuate in difficulty.

Side Note: Certain keyword tools assign difficulty scores to keywords.

Keyword Surfer does NOT….At least not in the same way that Ahrefs and Ubersuggest do.

What Keyword Surfer Does

The Keyword Surfer Chrome extension offers a monthly USA traffic value and a cost per click estimate for Google AdWords for any given keyword.

It also offers ideas for keywords that are related to your inquiry.

For instance:

If you search the word, “Google” in Google’s search engine, Keyword Surfer will automatically populate a list of related keywords, such as “gmail,” “Google play,” and “Chrome”.

The list Keyword Surfer creates is usually fairly extensive, with over 100 results.

On the list, Keyword Surfer keeps track of the “Overlap” between your original target query and the ideas it suggests.

If you want keywords that are more relevant to your query, then you’ll want to pick keywords with a higher Overlap percentage.

On the other hand:

If you’re more interested in adding conceptually related terms to boost your SEO content, then you can choose terms with less Overlap.

Regarding Keyword Difficulty Scores

Depending on the keyword tool you use, a short tail keyword like Google is bound to have a very high score.

In Ahrefs, the difficulty score for Google is ranked 98, i.e., Super Hard.

Meanwhile, Ahrefs puts the keyword phrase “alternative search engines” at 69, i.e., Hard.

For this reason, we would probably pass on “alternative search engines” as a medium tail keyword choice and find an alternative with a similar traffic value and a lower difficulty score, perhaps around 30.

Long Tail Keywords

As for long tail keywords, they constitute even narrower terms and are hyper-specific. These keywords are easy to win but are also of little value.

A good example of a valueless long tail keyword is “Google search engine alternatives in 2022”.

There is such little traffic for this term in Keyword Surfer that it has an effective traffic value of zero.

Save Time By Focusing On Traffic Value

You probably wouldn’t want to try and win this specific term unless you had a good reason to do so—perhaps winning it would allow you to win other related phrases.

For those who want to try and win long tail keywords (not advisable), you would want to look for phrases with at least some traffic value.

One Caveat To Trying Out Long Tail Keywords

If you’re really trying to win at SEO, we strongly recommend sticking with medium tail keywords.


If you are just learning the ropes to search engine optimization and want to get some practice with winning easy keyword phrases, then this would certainly be a good use of your time.

Creating SEO-Optimized Content

Once you’ve chosen your keywords, the next step is to create SEO-optimized content.

We look at backlink profile of your competitors and find out who is linking to them, which helps us to tailor your content in a way that increases the likelihood of you getting the same types of links.

Step 3: Schedule Your Content

Our next step is to schedule the creation of your content before we make it.

If you have multiple pieces of content that you want produced, we give each piece of content SEO-friendly titles and select an estimated publication date for each.

Step 4: Creating Your Content

This is where we make your content, which is the most labor-intensive part of our process.

When writing your content, our SEO team utilizes what we call a “content assembly line” through which we are able to complete your content in three drafts.

Our content assembly line process demands that we research your content’s subject matter, outline an impactful content structure, write the piece, edit the piece, and revise elements as needed.
